After graduating with a degree in English Literature and History, I spent a year teaching English in a primary school in Hong Kong and enjoyed travelling around both Hong Kong and Thailand. On returning to the UK, my first job was within the Marketing Department of an automotive manufacturer. Having previously worked as a bookseller at WH Smith, I then joined the company as a Management Trainee based within the Book Department. This led to positions as Book Department Assistant Manager and subsequently as Branch Assistant Manager. However, in this latter role, I very much missed the regular contact with books, publishers and customers.
My career as a Publishers’ Representative for Yale Representation has enabled me to combine my love of books, meeting people, sales and, of course, driving. I’ve covered territory from the South West to the North East over the years, and always meet interesting booksellers. Working with booksellers and publishers to find interesting ways to promote books is a very enjoyable aspect of the job.
The mix of academic and general lists we represent has enabled Yale Representation to gain contacts with a wide variety of bookselling opportunities. This personal and flexible approach enables us to meet the changing requirements of the book trade and of the publishers we represent.
